Spring is here and here it is a past famous picture from Norman Parkinson starring Audrey Hepburn wearing Givenchy. The last interpretation of this shot comes from the talented Sofia Coppola who directed Miss Dior campaign in 2013 with the actress Natalie Portman.

Have you ever noticed the fab campaign of the Babydoll Mascara of Yves Saint Laurent with Cara Delevigne? It’s something really hypnotic, sensual and in a way mysterious. Obviously it’s not a new concept or idea. In 1966 with the famous Pop Collection Yves Saint Laurent in person created the iconic tuxedo: le Smoking. Made up of an unisex, monochromatic simplicity, became a piece of iconography thanks to Helmut Newton photography. The intriguing shooting of 1975 for Vogue France with YSL smoking against the naked body of the model standing in a hazily lit Parisian alleyway represent a cult shot of fashion and photography history.  It’s such an actual concept that in 2013 for the mascara advertising we have a videoclip and a shooting with the same scene. From a garment to the history of style and photography.

Avete mai notato la campagna pubblicitaria del mascara Babydoll firmata Yves Saint Laurent con Cara Delevigne? Ebbene ancora una volta la novitĂ si cela dietro un repertorio di storia fotografica e di stile. Nel 1966, infatti, Yves in persona crea Le Smoking, il suo completo elegante, minimale, monocromatico e soprattutto unisex che diverrĂ iconico con gli scatti di Helmut Newton. SarĂ proprio Newton nel 1975 ad immortalare per Vogue Francia questo iconico completo decretandone il suo assoluto successo, abbinato ad un sottile e sensuale gioco di scambi di ruoli e generi tra le due modelle nelle vie di Parigi. Stesso concept intrigante viene riproposto nel 2013 per la campagna del make up Ysl con la top Cara Delevigne che reinterpreta in chiave contemporanea uno scatto ormai classico nel repertorio della fotografia e dello stile.

Lace, symbol of seduction and femininity, in these editorials it’s surprisingly interpreted as something mysterious and anxious. From the historical shooting by Edward Steichen in 1924 with the charming Gloria Swanson to te new interpretation of Paolo Roversi in 2009 for Acne Paper with a new androgynous icon: Tilda Swinton. But finally even the reexamined  sensual version by Ellen von Unwerth of lace masks for her models in the serie Fraulinen (2011) clearly reminds us linear, rigid Steichen style in modern and sensual way.
Pizzo, sinonimo di femminilitĂ e sensualitĂ , viene sorprendentemente interpretato con un tocco di mistero volendosi mostrare nel suo lato piĂą oscuro e ansioso in questi servizi che spaziano tra decenni lontani. Dallo storico shooting di Edward Steichen con l’affascinante Gloria Swanson alla nuova reinterpretazione di Paolo Roversi nel 2009 per Acne Paper con protagonista l’androgina Tilda Swinton. Infine, una sensuale rivisitazione della maschera in pizzo dall’ironica voyeurista Ellen von Unwerth nella serie Fraulinen (2011) che ci ricorda chiaramente lo stile lineare e rigido di Steichen con un tocco di moderna sensualitĂ .
The latest campaign of Dior for Summer 2014 represent an iconic Marion Cotillard photographed by Jean Baptiste Mondino in an indoor set jumping lightly. This kind of free jump is not a new style for photography if we think about the famous Avedon’s shooting with top models jumping in his studio during the 70s. But before, his most remembered shot, was the one with Carmen Dell’orefice jumping in freedom through Paris in 1939. It’s the pic for what we remind Avedon career but in reality it was  tribute to the big Munkacsi that was one of the most important fashion photographer in history. This special tribute called “Hommage to Munkacsi” expresses the spirit of freedom, dynamism that Munkacsi gave to fashion during his years spent at Vogue. The same style we can see nowadays in current campaigns.
L’ultima campagna pubblicitaria Dior per l’estate 2014 vede protagonista una splendida Maron Cotillard che si libera in un dolce salto nello studio fotografico di Jean Baptiste Mondino. Questo celebre “salto” non deriva da altro se non da quello che ricordiamo tutti essere “il salto nella moda” di Richard Avedon con protagonista Carmen dell’Orefice tra le strade di Parigi. Precisamente quest’ultimo amatissimo scatto non era altro che un omaggio di Avedon ad un grande nome della fotografia di moda: Munkacsi. E’ proprio dalla sua attivitĂ presso le redazioni du Vogue che nasce una fotografia i moda simbolo di dinamismo e libertĂ che  ancora oggi troviamo nelle campagne correnti.
Altra ispirazione Dior nasce dallo scatto realizzato per Vogue prima del secondo conflitto mondiale dalla mano di Blumenfeld con protagonista non di meno che la futura moglie di Irving Penn. La camminata spensierata sui tetti di Parigi tra le travi della Tour Eiffel sarĂ lo stesso tema ripreso da Peter Lindbergh non solo per Dior ma anche, nello stesso anno, per un servizio con Kate Winslet su Harper’s Bazaar dove vediamo cambiare ambientazione nella Grande Mela.
Another inspiration of Dior campaign is the one linked with the fab shooting of Blumenfeld in 1939 with the future wife of Irving Penn walking on the Tour Eiffel, up Paris’ roofs. The same style is used for Peter Lindbergh campaign for Dior in 2009 and, in the same year, for a shooting on Harper’s Bazaar with Kate Winslet in a different location: New York.
Finally we have a new kind of arraignment from art by Inez van Lamsweerde and her husband Matadin. A new interpretation of Manet famous painting for the serie Secret Garden realized for Dior in 2014.

Quando si dice che ormai nella moda, nell’arte, nella fotografia nulla viene piĂą inventato partendo da zero, che tutto è giĂ stato pensato, ideato e inventato. Cosa ci resta quindi da creare e inventare in un mondo in cui esiste giĂ tutto? Quello che il nostro universo postmoderno ha da offrirci è una serie infinita di tasselli che compongono un puzzle, si tratta un po’ come il gioco del memory: non ci resta altro che trovare la coppia corretta. Meglio ancora, nel nostro caso, la “copia” corretta. Chi si è ispirato a chi e a cosa ma soprattutto quando. Parlando di moda, piĂą precisamente di Prada, alcune tra le sue campagne piĂą interessanti sono firmate dal fotografo “cinematogrfico” per eccellenza: Glen Luchford. Nel 1997 con le sue inconfondibili tracce di noir e mistero crea una campagna pubblicitaria per Prada di cui nessuno avrebbe mai messo in discussione l’originalitĂ del risultato. Eppure ecco come anche un grande nome della fotografia ripropone lo scatto di Bill Beckley del 1977. Vent’anni prima, due correnti diverse, Luchford re della finzione filmicadello scatto e Beckley esponente della narrative art. Ad unirli un unico stile: atmosfera pseudo-thriller ed uno schema compositivo molto simile. Da qui nasce così lo scatto Prada con in primo piano le due seducenti gambe, ma il collegamento con Kubrick? Esattamente nella stessa campagna, altro scatto, stesso anno e stesso fotografo ma ispirato ad un decennio prima, il 1980. La modella Prada rivive nello scenario Luchford l’inquietudine del celebre labirinto dell’Overlook Hotel di Kubrick. Così il cerchio si completa, da Prada a Shining, semplicemente attraverso uno scatto.

This is the perfect example of when you say that nothing borns new today. Everything is related and inspired from something older, so, what we can do in a postmodern reality where everything still exists? We only have to play with all the tiles that compose this huge puzzle, it’s something like the memory game with cards, we have to find out the right couple. Better if we look for the right “copy”. This is why I’ve found a connection between Prada and Kubrick with a time gap of 20 years. All began in 1997 when the cinematographic photographer Glen Luchford shot a campaign for Prada inspired by the work of the narrative artist Bill Beckley of 1977. It’s clearly an arraignment of the pseudo thriller set rich of mystery of these two sexy female legs that capture our attention such as in a noir movie. The same composition and the same style for two different authors in different times. It’s so easily now to say that in the same year, 1997, Luchford transposed the Prada’s model in another horror-thrilling movie of 10 years before: the famous Shining by Kubrick. So this is the game, and here it is: from Prada to Kubrick through a shooting.
